RLC ranking high in ongoing 2014 Recyclemania

Sustainable Community — In the second week of the eight-week 2014 Recyclemania higher education Grand Champion competition, Richland College ranks number one in the state and the nation with a collection of 81,336 pounds of recycled materials. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities in their campus communities. In conjunction with Richland College’s bid for a Recyclemania national championship, the Sustainable Conversations group has launched its Subway Bag Special Re-Use Project to collect clean, dry, plastic Subway bags, reduce waste, re-purpose the bags, and create something useful from them. The group has collected 700 bags on their way to a 10,000-bag goal to convert the bags into plastic yarn and crochet the yarn into sustainable grocery shopping bags.
