T-Ducks sweep weekend series against Brookhaven

Freshman third baseman Josh Christenson helped set the tone for Richland over the weekend when the T-Ducks swept Brookhaven College in a three-game series at home.

With the series-opener tied at 3-3 on Friday, Christenson overcame two previous strikeouts to hit a towering three-run home run to left field as Richland went on to a 7-3 victory before winning 8-4 and 10-0 on Saturday.

“He was pressing a little bit but he’s been hitting really well for us on the year. I told him to flush out what happened in the past and to make the pitcher expand the zone a little bit, don’t press, see the ball and drive it,” T-Duck coach Joe Wharton said after the game. “Josh got a 1-2 curveball. It wasn’t a very good pitch but he made the adjustment. It was a huge hit for us.”

Two innings before Christenson’s home run, Richland trailed 3-1 before the T-Ducks scored a run to bring the score to 3-2.

The T-Ducks tied the game early in the sixth inning after Matt Redding led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice ground ball before scoring after the pitcher overthrew second base in a pickoff attempt.

Richland’s next two batters reached base before Christenson, who leads the team in batting average at .536 and entered the game second in home runs with seven (as of March 17), stepped up to the plate.

During the comeback, pitcher Casey Mayfield did an outstanding job in relief to pick up his sixth win of the season. “We left too many men on base, especially in scoring position. We gave them a couple of runs early,” Wharton said. “It’s important not to get behind because it can give the other team some momentum. But luckily we got through it. Casey Mayfield did an excellent job for us in relief.”Richland fans can watch the T-Ducks play again at home this Friday at 2 p.m. in the three-game series opener against Eastfield. The remaining two games of the series will be played on Saturday with Game 1 starting at noon.

The T-Ducks also play a home game at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 31 against Texas Wesleyan University.
