Former Richland College basketball player Tony Bishop, of Garland, was recently named to the Southland Conference’s All-Conference Second Team.
Bishop, who currently ranks fifth all-time in career blocks at Texas State, was the 2009 NJCAA Division III National Player of the Year and a two-time NJCAA Division III All-American for the T-Ducks. Bishop led Richland College to a NJCAA Division III National Championship in 2009.
For the season, Bishop led Texas State in points (13.1), rebounds (8.1), blocks (34), steals (37) and field goal percentage (.575).
As the Richland College baseball team began its longest road trip of the season on Monday March 21 against Navarro, the T-Ducks were looking to overcome their toughest stretch of the season.
Entering Monday’s game, the T-Ducks had a 10-16 record and had lost four games in a row, including being swept at home over the weekend by Eastfield College.
Leading the T-Ducks this season is John Gebhard, of Dallas, who ranks No. 18 in the country among NJCAA Division III hitters with a .405 batting average and No. 5 in RBIs with 20.
Up next for Richland is a double header at Texas Wesleyan on Thursday, March 24 and a three-game series against Cedar Valley College beginning on Friday, April 1 and concluding on Saturday, April 2. The T-Ducks’ next home game is at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 4 against Texas Wesleyan.
After going through a rough 1-6 stretch from Feb. 19 to March 5, the Richland College baseball team has responded by winning five of its next eight games going into this weekend’s three-game series at home against Metro Athletic Conference foe Eastfield College.
During these five victories, the T-Ducks have scored 44 runs. On the season, Richland College has a 10-13 overall record.
The T-Ducks open this weekend’s series with a 2 p.m. game on Friday, March 18 before playing a double header beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
For his outstanding play in Metro Athletic Conference action this season, Richland College basketball team’s Thomas Davis, a sophomore from Lufkin, was recently named to the First Team All-Conference team while teammate Ricky Roberts, a sophomore from Clarksville, earned a Third Team All-Conference nomination.
During a season in which the T-Ducks played 17 of its 19 nonconference game against Division I scholarship programs, Davis and Roberts’ play was outstanding. Davis finished the season averaging 14.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while also shooting 45.6 percent from the field. Roberts was Richland College’s second-leading scorer at 8.7 points per game. He also averaged 6.7 rebounds and one block per game.
In addition to Davis and Roberts, T-Ducks’ James Montue and Nathan Smith earned Honorable Mention while Ben Goodman and Adam Dirlbeck earned the Chancellor’s Award and Commissioner’s Award – both academic honors.
The T-Ducks finished the season 3-26.
