T-Duck men's soccer team ranked No. 1 in pre-season poll; women team's first regular season home game Aug. 27

As the Richland College men’s 2008 soccer season gets underway, the T-Ducks will start off where they finished last year – as the best NJCAA Division III team in the country.

According to the NJCAA pre-season poll, the defending champions enter this season ranked No. 1.

The T-Ducks, who will be vying for an unprecedented sixth national championship in the past seven years, finished last season with a 16-4-2 record.

Meanwhile, the pre-season poll for the women has yet to be released.

Richland College’s women’s team advanced to the semifinal round of the national tournament last year and has won two (2004 and 2006) of the last four women NJCAA Division III national championships.

The women’s first home game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27 against Tyler Junior College while the men are scheduled to host St. Edwards in a scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The first regular season home game for the T-Duck men is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 against Johnson County Community College.

Volleyball team's season gets underway

The Richland College volleyball team’s 2008 season gets underway this weekend on the road at a tournament at Lamar College in Port Arthur.

Head coach Zelda Smith and her squad are coming off a season in which the T-Ducks got off to a slow start but ended the regular season strong, ultimately finishing second in the Metro Athletic Conference.

Additionally, several players received all-conference honors, including Ashalyn Scales and NaKiethia Lampkin, whom both earned First-Team All-Conference and All-Region V Team accolades. Both Scales and Lampkin were sophomores last season and won’t be on this year’s roster.

However, four freshmen players – Jessica Moore, Ronda Ivey, Jocelyn Brown and Krysta Miles – were awarded honorable mention.

Should they all return to play this season, the T-Duck’s, which featured eight freshmen on last year’s roster, will have experience in key positions.

Richland College volleyball fans will get their chance to see coach Smith’s team play at home for the first time this year on Monday, Sept. 22 against Brookhaven College.
