Richland College Hosts 2011 Carnival of Steel Festival
Richland College will host the 2011 Carnival of Steel (COS) Festival, Saturday, April 16. This year, the COS Festival will feature steel bands, percussion ensembles and bands using various steel drums from around the country, performing all styles of music including Caribbean, Latin, classical and rock. Attendees will enjoy free concert performances from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. World renowned steel drum artist, Andy Narell will perform a demo clinic at 5:45 p.m. and an evening concert at 8 p.m.
Also appearing will be internationally acclaimed Trinidadian calypso singer and composer, Lord Relator; steel drum artist, Festival Tuner; Massed band leader, Shelly Irvine; and drum set and world percussion Guest Artist, Jose Aponte, from the University of North Texas.
Daytime concert performance spots are open for groups and soloists. The entry deadline is April 1. Vendors in music and Caribbean cultures will be on-site with food, clothing and other items for sale. Shelly Irvine, master tuner and builder, will be on hand to provide steel drum tuning service.
Tickets for the demo clinic are $5 and tickets for the guest artist evening concert are $15.
