“Pow[d]er” explores power structures as systems of reproductive ideology and seduction. Richards, artist and gallery director at Richland College, Dallas, offers new gunpowder drawings and large sculptures drawing associations between weaponry and beauty.
The work is an investigation into the power of the subliminal ideas or ‘temes’ within society, featuring an architectural installation pulsing with activity and sound along with several new, intricate drawings, made by igniting gunpowder on paper. The imagery offers organic patterns disguising and disrupting rifles set to impregnate the space –or the mind. (insert sinister laughter here)

As part of Richland College’s visiting artist program Ian F. Thomas will give a demonstrative workshop involving ‘image transfer on plaster.’

“The Ergonomics of Futility”
An Installation/ Performance by Sheepad Joglekar and Ian F. Thomas.

Sheepad and Ian’s work explores the inefficiencies found in complacency, inflation, futility and politics. The Ergonomics of Futility will utilize and demonstrate, through performance and installation, the inevitable, redundant conflicts between idealism and the real. It is expected to present complex critiques of socio-economic hierarchies that are entangled in everyday life. Employing diverse methods, this one-night-only happening will shine a light on issues that impact all of us.
BREAKDOWN: Ian and Shreepad will come to Dallas from Pennsylvania and Victoria, TX (respectively) on Wed the 17th. Ian will do a workshop at Richland College on Thursday the 18th for the Richaland College Clay Club. “Ergonomics and Futility” will be opening Saturday, Nov 20th in Dallas.
Ian F Thomas is formally trained with an MFA in Ceramics from Texas Tech University and currently teaches for Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. Shreepad Joglekar has an MFA in Photography from Texas Tech University and is an instructor for The Victoria College in Victoria, TX. Meeting in school they developed their original collaborations utilizing hybrid methodologies including sculpture, drawing and performance to realize their ideas. In Dallas the duo will create a performance based installation focused on economic futility… mostly contradictions involving work and money. Of the diverse methods mentioned, the artist will most likely employ students, volunteers, or day laborers to create then destroy objects and money conflicting the time/cost paradigm. The event should include several local participants who will repeatedly perform futile actions related to commerce and manual labor.

“Trajectory” is presented by Ro2 Art at ThirdSpace, benefiting Dallas Public Arts Project. Ryder Richards’ new drawings, installations, and sculptures are derived from the ballistic trajectory of a .243 Winchester rifle. The works explore the physical and metaphorical quandary of a trajectory as a quantified destiny, attempting to alter the predetermined path. The works will be on view August 7th through the 28th, 2010. Please join us for the opening receptions Saturday, August 7, 6-9 p.m.

ECU Gallery presents Persistent Breach, featuring the work of artists Piotr Chizinski, Ryder Richards, Sue Anne Rische and Jonathan Whitfill. The work ranges from altered books, gunpowder drawings, to cast bomb forms. The work questions social class systems, the intangible form of knowledge, and violence in a modern world. The exhibition will take place from February 12th – March 12th, 2010. The gallery will host a closing reception featuring an artist talk and question answer session on March 11th, 2010 from 12-2 PM.
Ryder Jon Piotrs (RJP) is comprised of artists who have created an alternative method of engagement with the development of a Nomadic Truck Gallery. The gallery is a converted 24’ Ryder truck complete with white sheetrock panels and track lighting. Since it’s debut almost 3 years ago the mobile gallery has prompted several group exhibitions for the RJP members. Most recently the group has shown in Dallas, Abilene, and Marfa. They have also hosted a national juried ceramics exhibition in Phoenix, Arizona.
In Persistent Breach the artists’ works offer individuality within a the larger context of the group. The continuous input of diversified viewpoints in our modern society has the possibility to homogenize all ideas. Each artist is aware and responding to the collective works of his or her peers while simultaneously maintaining a level of personal ingenuity. The persistent breach of information and individuality creates a constant state of awareness and response within the group and, therefore, within the art.

The Ryder Jon Piotrs Nomadic Gallery presents No.3: What you do after No. 2, an exhibit of contemporary Texas artists held in conjunction with the Waypoint Gallery. The group show will feature new pieces questioning and commenting on the nature of a nomadic gallery, societal perceptions and personal identity. The artists work in a range of media including steel, ceramics, installation and painting. The nomadic gallery event will coincide with the Chinanti Open House weekend, October 9th and 10th, 2008. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, October 10th, 2008. During the opening reception the Thrift Store Cowboys, Tyler T. and Los SOBs will provide music. This event is free and open to the public.
No.3: What you do after No. 2 will feature work by artists Piotr Chizinski, Mark Collup, B.C. Gilbert, Nathan Green, Anna Krachey, Andrea Moon, Cat Prose, Ryder Richards, Sue Anne Rische, Brian Wheeler, Jeffery Wheeler, Jonathan Whitfill and David Willburn. With installation work and outdoor pieces by Emily Bales, Shreepad Joglekar, Chad Plunkett, Nola Richards, Charlie Scala, Ian F. Thomas and Christopher Walnoha. Each artist has developed a method of assessing and refining their work that not only confronts, but also speaks of aesthetics and unique presentation. Several of the artists display a tongue in cheek humor while commenting on grave issues that face our world, while others focus their energy on process and engage the complexities of material and mind.
Ryder Jon Piotrs (RJP) is a collaborative art group based celebrating our third year of exhibits by returning to Marfa, the site of our first nomadic exhibition. The gallery is comprised of a 24 foot Ryder moving truck converted into a sophisticated gallery space complete with track lighting. The Waypoint Gallery generously offered space to the RJP Nomadic Gallery for this year’s exhibition. Waypoint Gallery is located at 208 South Summer Street, Marfa, Texas.
