Want to “Spice Up” Your Resume?

Are you about to enter the job market?  What credentials do you have on your resume that might catch a potential employer’s eye?

Many individuals looking for employment are learning that computer skills are very important and often required.  How is it possible to display on your resume that you are proficient in using application programs such and Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Let’s take a look at the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification program.  This program offers exams in the most current version of Office (2016) as well as the two previous versions, Office 2013 and Office 2010.

Microsoft Office 2016 Specialist Certifications are offered in the following categories:

  • Microsoft Word 2016
  • Microsoft Excel 2016
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2016
  • Microsoft Access 2016
  • Microsoft Outlook 2016
  • Microsoft Word 2016 Expert
  • Microsoft Excel 2016 Expert

All Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams are timed and require a comprehensive knowledge of the features provided by the software.  Click on the following link to download the exam objectives for one or all of these exams.  These objectives provide a list of tasks you could be asked to perform when taking the exam and serve as a guide to assess your current skill level and prepare to take one of the exams. Here is a partial sample (not in order) of the Excel 2016 Exam Objectives:

Creating and Manage Worksheets and Workbooks

  • Create a workbook

Navigate in Worksheets and Workbooks

  • Search for data within a workbook

Perform Conditional Operations by using Functions

Format and Modify Text by using Functions

  • Format text by using RIGHT, LEFT, and MID functions

Richland College is a Certified Microsoft Testing Center.  The Business Office Systems and Support department offers courses both in the classroom and online in Office 2016 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access). These courses are designed to prepare students to attempt with confidence the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam for the course in which they are enrolled.

If you are thinking of going back to work, changing careers, or entering the job market for the first time, MOS certifications are excellent credentials to add to your resume. Employers know that certification guarantees knowledge without further training and often look for these credentials on a candidate’s resume.

Creative Gift Giving

Do you have someone on your holiday list that is hard to buy for or someone who seems to have everything? Looking for a one of a kind gift? Microsoft Office has the answer. Create custom calendars to give as gifts. Calendar templates are available in every program. Word has 39 templates, Excel has 45 templates, PowerPoint has 11, Publisher has 19, and Access has 2. Each program has a variety of layouts, sizes and color schemes. Customize the calendar with personal photos and meaningful dates. Print the calendars on cardstock and staple (either at the top or in the middle so it can be folded). For a small fee you can get the calendar professionally printed and bound at a local office supply store.

To create a calendar, click, on File, New, type in Calendar in the Search for Online Templates box, and choose your favorite template.

What’s the Difference between Office 2016 and Office 365

As a student at any of the DCCCD campus locations (Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Eastfield, El Centro, Mountain View, Northlake, Richland) you are able to download for free Office 365 including free space on Microsoft’s OneDrive (cloud storage space).

Do you know all of the benefits of this free software?  Review the third column in the table below to better understand what you are receiving at no cost.

If you are not a student but are considering upgrading to Office 2016 or Office 365, you may also want to review the table.  The first column lists the feature, the second the features you will receive if you purchase Office 2016, and the third the features you will receive if you subscribe to Office 365.

Although you may have a preference, most software is going to subscription pricing.  This might be the last version of Microsoft Office to offer a one-time purchase option.  Regardless of which option you choose, Microsoft continues to expand the features available to users of their Office software suite.

“Dee,” as she is known to colleagues and to many of her students, is a full-time BOSS faculty member in Richland’s BOSS program, where she has taught for the past 17 years. Dee holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Teacher Education from Southern Illinois University and a Master’s Degree in Business Education from Memphis State University.

Dee brings a tremendous wealth of experience and knowledge to students who are enrolled her BOSS classes in many important ways, because she has

  • taught at private and public education institutions (both at the secondary and community college levels).
  • provided corporate training to a number of companies in the DFW area.
  • designed curriculum for public and private institutions.
  • created staff development programs and activities for several local DFW ISDs.
  • supervised and managed corporate personnel both in the United States and abroad.
  • served on the board of directors of the Dallas County affiliate of The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She also received that organization’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
  • received Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) software certifications over the years in the key Microsoft software applications–Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint.

We are proud to call Dee one of our own, and we are thrilled that her on-going contributions to helping students succeed have received such laudatory recognition!

Exploring New Features in Word 2016

With Word 2016 making its debut last September and now that the year 2016 has arrived, it’s a good time to explore some of the new features that are in this latest version of Word.

Use the Tell Me Feature

01-19-2016 Word Feature 1aThis feature can help you get the answers (and steps) to tasks quickly and easily. Simply look to the right on the ribbon and locate the text field which will allow you to type in your query or topic.
For example, I decided I wanted to find out how to insert a math equation into a Word document. As you can see in the next two illustrations, it’s just that easy—type the topic and you will be presented with a list of possibilities. Another feature that is contained within the equations area is Ink Equations.

Write with Ink Equations
If I decide at this point that I want to actually “write” an equation, I can use my mouse to draw the equation or use my finger or a stylus with a touch screen device. My “written” equation will automatically be converted to text.

Take Advantage of Smart Lookup
Use Bing’s lookup feature to help you with research on the web or word definitions without leaving Word. Simply select the word or phrase and right-click it and then choose Smart Lookup from the short-cut menu. You will at least get definitions, perhaps some Wiki articles, and depending on the topic/phrase, you may get graphics as well. I chose “social media” as my topic, and the second screen shot below shows a wealth of information that was generated, and all without leaving Word!

Collaborate Quickly and Easily
Need to work on a document with other people? If you use OneDrive or SharePoint, you can collaborate in “real time.” In other words, you can see the changes made by each other as they happen. Once you’ve saved the document online, you just click Share (located in the far-right corner) to generate a link or email an invitation. Once the others have opened the document and agreed to share changes, you can see their changes as they happen.

Create Great Looking Shapes Faster and Easier
Word’s lineup up of shapes from the Shapes gallery just got easier by allowing you to give your documents that professional look in selecting the color or special effect enhancements for your shapes from a list of presets.
