Richland Theatre Alum Jason Waggoner Presents Theatrical Sound Design and Composition

Richland alum Jason Waggoner will lead a workshop based on his broad experiences with theatrical sound design and composition 12-1:30 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 4, 2010. This is a rare opportunity to learn behind-the-scenes techniques for those interested in pursuing sound design. Using examples from past productions and hands-on exercises, Waggoner will lead participants through his process from the beginning to end of a dramatic theatrical production.

A native of Dallas, Waggoner graduated from Richland College with his Associate of Arts degree in May 2003. He has since gone on to receive his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Design and Management from the University of Texas at Arlington and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sound Design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

In his professional career, Waggoner served as Resident Sound Designer for Dallas’ own Classical Acting Company during their 2004-2005 seasons, as well as holding that same title for CoRE in California in 2007 and the Adirondack Theatre Festival for their Summer Season in 2008. Other theatre companies Waggoner has done sound design work for include Plano Repertory Theatre, North Carolina Stage Company, and The 62 Center for Theatre and Dance. In addition, he spent two summers working as an audio technician and mix engineer at the Disneyland Resort in California. Besides his theatrical work, he is also a frequent collaborator with sculptor Vicki Grant and architect/computer enthusiast Art Robinson. Together the trio creates ceramic wall sculptures that use sound, light, and a variety of sensors to tell stories and create environments. Their work is currently on display in various galleries throughout the North Carolina region.

Since 2008, Waggoner has been employed by the German loudspeaker manufacturer d&b audiotechnik in the role of education and application support. This position includes education on the functions and uses of d&b audtiotehcnik’s product line, as well as basic principals of audio and sound reinforcement. While with d&b audiotechnik, Waggoner has had the privilege of working on a variety of projects including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Allen Room, Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theatre, and The Capitol Theatre. He is currently based in Asheville, North Carolina.
