Brazos Gallery Presents “C.S. WATSON AND THE COSMIC WOMB”, by JooYoung Choi

square cardThe Brazos Gallery has been populated with 40 different works, including paintings, video art, animation, puppets and music created by JooYoung Choi, a current Lawndale Art Center Studio program resident.

Choi has prepared an eclectic multi-media experience that weaves her life story as a Korean adoptee (who was able to successfully reunite with her birth family), with the classic coming of age mono-myth, to develop an epic fantasy world filled with heroines, monsters and supernatural beings.

richlandshowJooYoung Choi blends Eastern, Western, and Pop Culture together to create a strange new paracosmic reality she calls the Cosmic Womb. This exhibition focuses on the journey of Choi’s protagonist C.S. Watson, the royal artist and official historian of this magical land.

Through large scale paintings using familiar Christian composition from stained glass windows and early western painting, she merges them with a style of image making popular in Korea during the Japanese occupation.

Humorous videos resembling the Sesame Street sing along format, hand drawn cartoons, animated collages of a child finding a place she can call home, retro community access bulletin boards play simultaneously on 7 different televisions within the gallery (viewers can choose to watch the videos on either VHS or DVD).

Through her prolific and passionate love for storytelling and art making, Choi has brought an imaginary world to the Brazos gallery, one that may feel both alien and delightfully familiar all at once.
